Childcare assistance can make licensed care more affordable for eligible families in Concord and throughout Contra Costa County. The process may feel complicated, but it becomes easier when families know where to start and what information to prepare.
What is a childcare subsidy?
A childcare subsidy helps pay part or, in some cases, most of an eligible family’s childcare cost. Assistance may be connected to employment, school, job training, CalWORKs or another qualifying circumstance. Eligibility, family fees and authorized hours are determined by the administering agency—not by the childcare provider.
Where Contra Costa families can begin
- Contact Contra Costa County Employment & Human Services if your family participates in CalWORKs or receives county services.
- Ask the local Resource and Referral agency about subsidized childcare programs and current application procedures.
- Prepare proof of need for care, income information and your child’s basic enrollment records when requested.
- Confirm that the childcare provider accepts the subsidy program before completing enrollment.
Questions parents often ask
Does receiving assistance guarantee a childcare opening?
No. Funding authorization and provider availability are separate. Families should confirm both before choosing a start date.
Will I have a family fee?
Some families may have a required fee based on program rules, income and family size. The administering agency explains the amount and payment responsibilities.
Can I choose my childcare provider?
Many programs allow families to select an eligible licensed provider that accepts their authorization, subject to program requirements.
